The 2010 Southeast Regional Barista Competition was held this past weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. The event has steadily grown the last few years along with the skill of the greater Atlanta area barista community. This year's competition featured many talented baristas including first-time and veteran competitors and past champions. Batdorf & Bronson® Coffee Roasters one and only competitor, Chandler Rentz made his first appearance this past weekend and performed with grace on confidence earning the second place spot alongside the seasoned two-time Southeast Regional Barista Champion, Lem Butler. With an audience of over 100 people watching onsite at the King Plow Arts Center and just as many watching an online stream, Rentz used the skills developed in his career as a barista and barista trainer to carefully craft dazzling espresso drinks. His signature drink was both delicious and visually stunning. Adding heavy cream, almond and candied ginger to his espresso base, Rentz then wowed the judges by lighting the oil spray from orange peels to create a fireworks effect. I came into the competition focused on enjoying the experience and doing the coffee justice, said Rentz. I was honored to make the finals and then flabbergasted to end up in second place among a group of baristas whose skills and devotion to coffee inspire me.
