A Sweet and Balanced Coffee from our longtime partners, the Mierisch family
Tasting Notes: honey, pecan, orange marmalade
Process: Washed
Region: Matagalpa, El Arenal
Altitude: 1300+ meters
Variety: Caturra Estrella
ROASTERS NOTES:
The Mama Mina estate is one of eight farms owned and managed by the Mierisch family in Nicaragua. We have been purchasing coffee from them since 1998, and they are one of our longest running relationship coffees. While this offer from Mama Mina is new to our lineup, coffee from Los Placeres, another Mierisch owned farm in Matagalpa, has been a staple in our Dancing Goats blend for over 20 years.
The family manages all aspects of quality from the farm level through exportation and has been a model of sustainability and quality. There are several “Cup of Excellence” trophies on their shelf, and they have been pioneers in processing and variety experimentation.
This fully washed offer from Mama Mina is a “Caturra Estrella” variety, a natural mutation of Caturra that grows shorter and wider with long lush branches. Every time I visit these farms it is a lesson in coffee agronomy. The farm is meticulously maintained, colorful, and beautiful. Varietal separation is carefully maintained, and post-harvest processing is diligently monitored. The Arenal microclimate is very cool and cloudy, so the cherries mature slowly and develop a remarkable amount of sweetness.
